Roaster's Notes:

In 2013, we became the first U.S. Roastery to purchase and showcase coffee from the Mpanga Washing Station. It has been an annual staple of our single-origin menu ever since.

The Ryirengeye lot is one of our favorite outturns from Mpanga, and we have featured it several times in the past few years. The Mpanga was built in 2008 by SEGEC (loosely translated from French as the Society for Producing and Exporting Coffee). SEGEC was founded by Jean Clement Birabereye--who oversees the mill’s coffee operation--shortly before Mpanga was built. Mpanga is located in the Kayanza Province, in the northern part of the country. The station receives and processes coffees from over 300 small farms that are owned by families in the surrounding area. Jean Clement’s experience and dedication to sorting and processing have already earned SEGEC a reputation for producing high quality coffee, as evidenced by the facts that SEGEC was recognized by both the the Burundi Cup of Prestige in 2011 and was the winner of the Burundi Cup of Excellence in 2014.

Fragrant notes of grape, cherry and cardamom permeate the coffee’s dry aroma. In the cup, the cherry note rises to the forefront and is brought to life by a lush, juicy body and crisp acidity. Cinnamon, lime and an undercurrent of puffed wheat from deep layers complexity beneath high notes of apple cider and lime.

Somehow Mpanga’s coffees continue to get better. We couldn’t be happier to have the opportunity to feature these wonderful coffees year after year.
