This season’s Holiday Blend celebrates two coffees from Central America. The base of the blend is a coffee from Finca El Durazno, in the mountains of Huehuetenango, Guatemala and rounded out by a beautiful coffee from Finca Las Brisas in Western Honduras. Both of these farms represent two of our favorite coffees of the year and combine beautifully in a cup bursting with juicy citrus, spices, and sweetness.
In 1987, during the thick of the holiday season, the New York Times published a small piece on the pomander (“pa-men-der”). Although its usage dates to the thirteenth century, its function has largely remained the same- an orange dried and preserved with cinnamon and clove interspersed, crafted with the intention of aromatically refreshing the atmosphere of a home.
Victrola’s 2019 Holiday blend takes cues from this tradition, combining two Central American coffees to produce a juicy orange flavor and body accented by the comforting notes of baking spices. Its round mouthfeel is accompanied by a medium citric acid held in check by its sweetness, much like its orange brightness is mellowed by hints of cinnamon, cocoa, clove and custard.
Today, creating a pomander is a fragrant act of memory, familial and seasonal ties, and we hope that Victrola’s 2019 Holiday blend will represent the same. Might the brewing and sharing of this distinctive coffee bring to mind the title of the aforementioned newspaper clipping- “Simple to Make, Delightful to Give.”
