Rwanda Gakenke - Victrola Coffee
Victrola Coffee - Rwanda Gakenke
We’re excited to be welcoming back one of our favorite and most dear-to-our-heart coffees that we have the honor of featuring each season. The Rwanda Hinga Kawa Washed Process from the Rushashi sector of Gakenke, Rwanda.
This coffee was grown and processed by the Hinga Kawa Women’s Association. Hinga Kawa is an all-women farmers association which is part of the Abakundakawa Rushashi Cooperative. Abakundakawa--which means “those who love coffee”--was formed in 2004, and was the first women’s farmer cooperative of its kind in Rwanda. The cooperative is doing an astonishing job of producing exceptional coffee, given that just over 20 years ago the country endured one of the darkest humanitarian crises in modern history. From 1990 to 1994 Rwanda was embroiled in the Rwandan Civil War--between the Rwandan Defense Force (Hutu ethnic group) and the Rwandan Patriotic Front (Tutsi ethnic group)--and subsequent Rwandan Genocide. An estimated 800,000 Tutsi were murdered in the genocide, and an additional 2,000,000 Rwandans were displaced from their country.
Hinga Kawa includes both Hutu and Tutsi members, and was born out of a desire to make poverty their mutual enemy--instead of each other. With this mission, the women of Hinga Kawa have been able to move forward and heal their community through their vision, leadership and desire to produce great coffee.
You’ll notice lovely notes of cherry, spice cake and grapefruit oil in the coffee’s dry aroma. When brewed, the cherry note becomes a lower-toned rich dried cherry, and is accompanied by exceptionally clear notes of melon and hibiscus. The brightly crisp citrus-like acidity steals the show through a pleasantly lingering finish.
